The recency illusion is the belief that something is of recent origin simply because someone has just become aware of it. Coined by linguist Arnold Zwicky, it suggests that our selective attention can lead us to think that phenomena we notice for the first time are new, even if they have existed for a long time.
Example
For instance, many people believe that the term 'singular they' is a modern linguistic development, but it has been in use since the 14th century.
How to overcome this bias
To overcome this bias, seek out historical context and research the origins of the phenomenon in question, thereby gaining a broader perspective on its timeline.
